Decking replacement
The sheathing under the shingles
Ice and water shield is a self-adhering rubberised membrane applied at the roof's most vulnerable points — eaves, valleys, and around penetrations — where ordinary underlayment is not enough. It seals around fixings rather than just lying under them, so water that gets past the covering still cannot reach the decking. It matters most where meltwater backs up behind ice at a cold eave, and in valleys where water volume is highest.
Head of the Harbor sits on a barrier-adjacent island where three things attack a roof at once. Salt air corrodes every metal component up there — flashing, fasteners, drip edge, vent collars — so the parts meant to outlast the shingles frequently do not, and most leaks here turn out to be metal failures rather than shingle failures. Nor'easters bring sustained wind with rain driven sideways, which gets under courses that would shed any amount of vertical water. Then winter adds ice damming at the eaves, where meltwater running down a warm roof refreezes over the cold overhang and backs up beneath the shingles. Housing stock across Suffolk County runs older than the national average, with a lot of complex roof geometry, dormers and additions — and every junction is another place flashing has to work.
Head of the Harbor has a population of about 1,520, and the housing stock here sets the pattern for what fails first on a roof.
At the eaves it matters most anywhere that gets freeze-thaw and ice damming — the colder the winter, the more it earns its cost. In valleys and around penetrations it is worth having in any climate, because that is about water volume rather than ice.
Only where the covering comes off, since it bonds directly to the decking. It is a re-cover or major-repair item rather than a retrofit.
